Understanding my Arthritis

Why do my joints hurt?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just wear and tear.

There’s a fair bit of genetics involved, though repetitive injury isn’t ideal either.

In our experience, it’s often knees, hips and hands. If you’re parents had it there’s a chance it can get passed down.

Guidlines for management for arthritis recommend weight loss, exercise, and finding ways to move that help you improve.

What can we do about it?

Jenkins Physiotherapy uses hands on manual therapy, exercises, dry needling, advice and ongoing recommendations to help your body recover. We can also recommend the right supportive bracing when it’s needed.

It’s not just physical. It’s normal to want to stop when moving hurts, but over a long period of reduced mobility our joints can actually deteriorate and become more sensitive. This keeps compounding and needs special guidance.

We find ways to strengthen joints and muscles, and send clear messages to encourage healing and joint restoration.

Often if land based exercises are too painful, hyrdrotherapy can be a good option.

We also want to find exercise that you can do that is healthy and not harmful.

Other types of arthritis including gout and rheumatoid arthritis need more specialised advice.
