Understanding my Neck Pain and why it hurts

Why does my neck hurt?

Your neck can hurt from unaccustomed activity. Either too much or too little can cause a strain which registers as pain.

It’s our bodies strategy to get our attention to change something. Either get moving, or slow down for a bit, try a different posture regularly, and treat it nice.

How much pain we feel is dependant on individual circumstances which aren’t just always physical.

Stress, anxiety, our community of people and past experiences can all work to amplify or sustain pain states.

If pain is radiating down your arm to your hand, with pins and needles or numbness you may have a pinched nerve.

Nerves can get irritated from joints, ligaments and discs etc pressing on them, or also from chemical irritation of the nerve from inflammation.

What can we do about it?

Jenkins Physiotherapy uses hands on manual therapy, exercises, dry needling, advice and ongoing recommendations to help your body recover.

This can involve making changes to the way you interact with your surrounds, eg workstation, family circumstances.

Making an assessment of how your body is moving, and if tightness or flexibility is restricting or not helping.

Being aware of your thoughts, previous experiences, and beliefs around the meaning of pain, and expectations.

We look to asess range of movement, muscle length, nerve mobility, and posture to inform your treatment and recovery plan.
