Understanding my Shoulder Pain and why it hurts

Why does my shoulder hurt?

Did you have an incident, or did your shoulder just get sore over time?

We treat traumatic shoulders and those that just get sore over time a bit differently.

Different issues are more or less commong depending on age and mechanism of injury: from rotator cuff strains, tears, arthritis, dislocations, SLAP lesions and frozen shoulder.

Also be aware that a scan isn’t the whole story, and anyone over 40 years of age will have a scan that shows a few ‘grey hairs’.

What can we do about it?

Is your shoulder stiff, painful or hypermobile? There’s a different approach to each.

Jenkins Physiotherapy uses hands on manual therapy, exercises, dry needling, advice and ongoing recommendations to help your body recover. We can also recommend the right supportive bracing when it’s needed.

We find ways to strengthen affected joints and muscles, and progressively restore active range of movements.

We also want to find exercise that you can do that is healthy and gets you back to normal.

You should know that tendons can take weeks and sometimes months to heal.

Flare ups can happen, but we manage that and get going again.

Sometimes pain is too much to get a good start with rehab, in which case an injection may be considered if ice and painkillers haven’t resolved acute pain.
