Understanding my Growing Pains

What are growing pains?

Bones get longer before muscles get stronger.

This puts strain on the anchor points of the muscles and tendons.

It’s often related to overload from new, sustained or sudden increase in activity.

Commons sites for growing pains are:

  • heel in Severs Disease

  • knee in Osgood Schlatters Disease

  • tip of the hip (hip flexor)

  • middle back in Scheurmanns Disease.

While there can be a great deal of variability, for girls this is generally 10-12 years of age and 12-14 years of age for boys.

We also often see this after school holidays when the kids restart everything, or when winter and summer sport seasons overlap.

What can we do about it?

Jenkins Physiotherapy uses hands on manual therapy, exercises, dry needling, advice and ongoing recommendations to help your body recover. We can also recommend the right supportive bracing when it’s needed.

We provide recommendations for management including offloading the affected area and managing exercise and recovery.

We find ways to strengthen muscles and their bony attachments, and restore strength and fun!

We want to find exercise that you can do that is just right for each step of your recovery journey and keep you going.
